Where can I find how many mortgages were issued this year by state?

Anyone know of a website that would have this information for free? I’m trying to find out on a per state basis, how many mortgages were issued last year.

    Go to the county clerk’s office in each county of each state you want the number for. Browse their recorded document index and count the number of Deeds Of Trust recorded in that county. Add up the results from each county to get the state total.
